The system for loading and unloading a combination of containers and bulk materials from ships uses a crane (7) whose tower is mounted on a portal (4). This is supported by columns (4.1, 4.2) fitted with bogie assemblies (18, 19). A support frame (5.1) mounted below the tower carries additional support columns (5.2) on the shipward side. These can be raised and lowered and carry retractable rails or endless track assemblies (21).
