Light emitting diode comprises a substrate with channels (31) containing electrically conducting material; a thin film buffer layer formed on the surface of the substrate; an epitaxial layer (34) with a pn-junction to emit light formed on the surface of the buffer layer; a first electrode (36) formed on a partial surface of the epitaxial layer. A conducting layer (326) formed on the base surface and/or the lower side of the substrate so that current conducting paths, starting at the first electrode, are produced through the epitaxial layer, the buffer layer and each channel to the conducting layer.
