Production of a base/clear two coat varnish and/or a transparent sealing layer on a substrate, involves applying a transparent covering agent comprising: (i) 70-100 wt.% radically polymerizable olefinic groups containing oligo- and/or pre-polymers and comprising 75-100 wt.% aliphatic urethane (meth)acrylate of (meth)acryloyl functionality 3-4.5 and (ii) 0-30 wt.% olefinic groups containing reactive diluents of calculated mol. mass below 500. Production of a base/clear two coat varnish and/or a transparent sealing layer on the outer covering of a substrate varnish surface comprises applying and curing by radical polymerization or using high energy radiation a transparent covering agent comprising: (i) 70-100 wt.% radically polymerizable olefinic groups containing oligo- and/or pre-polymers and comprising 75-100 wt.% aliphatic urethane (meth)acrylate of (meth)acryloyl functionality 3-4.5 and calculated mol. mass at least 826 and obtained by converting 8C alicyclic aliphatic diisocyanates and/or polyisocyanates derived from them with a low mol. wt. compound(s) with at least one hydroxyl group and a (meth)acryloyl group(s) and optionally a low mol. wt. diol(s) and/or polyol(s); and (ii) 0-30 wt.% olefinic groups containing reactive diluents of calculated mol. mass below 500.
