A coating composition for plastics surfaces containing: (a) an epoxide containing Si oxide sol, with its epoxide groups partially reacted with hydroxyalkylsulfonic acid, and (b) a maleic acid or maleic acid anhydride mixed polymer. An Independent claim is included for a solvent resistant protective layer for a plastics body, which is the crosslinking product of the components of the coating composition as above.
