An alternating magnetic field (6) is produced in the fluid (2), This induces a current flow (7) in it. The magnetic field of the induced current opposes the applied magnetic field. The resultant (8) of these fields is measured. From the value obtained, the conductivity of the fluid is determined. An Independent claim is included for the corresponding apparatus. Preferred features: The alternating magnetic field is produced using an excitation coil (4) passing an alternating current (I). Its frequency is 1-1000 kHz and it is located outside the fluid. A measurement coil (9) is used to measure the resultant field, which is also located outside the field. In the apparatus, both coils are combined as a test coil system.
