The method involves varying the current drawn by a module superimposed on a DC supply voltage (U(t)) supplied by a central (1) unit via at least one connecting line with a current signal, whereby the central unit compares the current drawn with a reference value in order to receive the signal (Isignal(x,t)) . The central unit cyclically or permanently detects the current drawn as the sum of the current currents drawn by the modules (2.x...2.n) and adapts the reference value accordingly. An Independent claim is also included for an application of a signal transmission method to a signal bus system, especially for a vehicle occupant protection system.
