Process for forming wear-resistant layers on the surfaces of cast iron piston rings, in ring grooves of pistons and inner walls of cylinders as components for piston engines comprises heating a region that is near to the component to be coated to a temperature at which the melting temperature of at least one phase of a nickel- or cobalt-based alloy as the coating material is reached; and after reaching this temperature conveying the powdered alloy dosed onto the heated region and forming the wear-resistant layer on the component surface by rotation. An Independent claim is also included for a device for carrying out the process comprising an inductor connected to a regulating HF generator; and a conveying device arranged directly next to the inductor above the component surface.
