A procedure for engine reduction with the closing of the converter coupling for an auto gearbox of a car is described. The starting value of the engine reduction is started via an adjustable ramp in the time region of the application of the lamellas to the converter bypass coupling. The engine reduction is adjusted with the aid of a performance graph. In the performance graph, the amount of the engine reduction is laid down above the measured speed ratio. The controller principle corresponds to a performance graph controller. The engine reduction is ended automatically by measuring a parameter.
