Process for determining the gas quality of a sample gas using a spectroscopic process comprises determining the pressure and temperature of the sample gas; forming a spectral vector S in a number of spectral regions by integrating values of the transmission spectrum of the gas; and multiplying the spectral vector S with a factor vector V obtained by calibration measurements of the spectral vector on calibrating gases of known properties and under known conditions to determine a physical parameter for the gas quality. Preferred Features: The factor vectors are determined by calibration measurements carried out on calibrating gases of known properties and under known conditions.
