The method involves holding a braking force on at least on wheel of the vehicle independently of the brake pedal position when the vehicle stationary state is detected and relieving the force if at least one condition for doing so exists. The braking force is reduced irrespective of the condition if sliding of the vehicle is detected. At least one condition for reducing the force is expiry of a period after releasing the brake pedal. Independent claims are also included for an arrangement for controlling a motor vehicle.
