Preparation of phenol and acetone comprises the homogeneous acid catalyzed cleavage of cumyl hydroperoxide in a cleavage apparatus comprising a microreactor with microchannels for the reaction mixture. Phenol and acetone is prepared by the homogeneous acid catalyzed cleavage of cumyl hydroperoxide in a cleavage apparatus comprising a microreactor with microchannels for the reaction mixture, the catalyst being dosed via one of the microchannels. Independent claims are included for: (1) a microreactor used in the above process comprising microchannels for the acid catalyst, reaction mixture and acids; and (2) an apparatus used in the above process comprising a reactor(s) including the above microreactor.
