The machine frame (10) supports a workpiece spindle (26) and a numerically controlled guide column (46) moves relative to an X-slide movable relative to the machine frame. The guide column is mounted to rotate in the Y-direction in spaced opposing bearing areas (64, 66) of the X-slide (40) and can be moved in the direction of the Y-axis relative to the bearing areas. The guide column can both rotate and move in the Y direction in the same bearing areas. A guide element rotatable but axially immovable on the guide column can be moved relative to the slide through a linear drive (94).
