Production of a (meth)acrylic acid ester comprises condensation of a 1-16C alcohol and (meth)acrylic acid in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor in a reaction column containing a solid acid catalyst at 10 mbar to 5 bar and 50-200 deg C whereby water containing vapor mixture is withdrawn from the top of the column and an ester rich product is withdrawn from the reactor base. A process for the production of an acrylic acid ester or methacrylic acid ester comprises condensation of a 1-16C alcohol and acrylic acid or methacrylic acid in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor in a reaction column containing a solid acid catalyst at 10 mbar to 5 bar and 50-200 deg C whereby water containing vapor mixture is withdrawn from the top of the column, condensed and the water phase separated from the process with recycling of the residual condensate to the reaction column; and an ester rich product is withdrawn from the reactor base.
