The gas generator (1) has a housing (3) enclosing an explosive charge (4) and an associated electrically-operated detonator (5) and provided with flow openings (9) allowing the gases generated by the explosive charge to be supplied to the passenger restraint, e.g. an inflatable airbag. A measuring sensor (14) detects accidental detonation of the explosive charge, supplied to an evaluation circuit (15) controlling release of a locking device (13) for a blocking element (12) covering an emergency exit opening (11) in the housing, for discharge of the generated gases.
