A sheet fed printing press has a feed unit (4) with a catcher rake for the residual stack. The catcher rake may be raised or lowered and is linked to a grooved lifting plate bearing a stack of paper. The feed unit (4) has a touch sensor (10) which contacts the groove in the stacking plate (8). The sensor detects the groove cross-section, height and side-position.
