A waste water treatment plant receives a supply of water containing suspended mineral solids heavier than water such as sand. Particles are removed from the water in a sand trap (1) with a central cylindrical hanging separator panel (21) above a flow-reversal baffle plate cone (5) , from which it is separated especially by a gap (22) . The hanging panel (21) separates the trap interior chamber (2) into inlet (31) and outlet (41) zones. The flow-reversal baffle (5) is essentially transverse to the direction of flow (S) . The lower end of the separator panel (21) describes an angle of between 25 and 75 degrees with respect to the flow-reversal baffle. The water inlet (31) is the zone between the wall (2) and separator trap cylinder (21) . The trap base has air (7) inlets into the cone (5) which is capped by a perforated (52) plate. The sand trap base has a sand removal pipe (6) . The upper part of the trap has an internal skimmer funnel for the removal of floating solids.
