The device has at least one conductivity sensor (4) and a temperature sensor (5) arranged in a hollow (1) of a casing having four hollows. Four light diodes (6) in the casing display the health state. An electronic evaluation unit has a calibration program to evaluate the conductivity and temperature signals. Preferably, the conductivity sensor has carbon electrodes and the temperature sensor has infrared sensors. The device may be connected to a central computer with wires or a radio or infrared link. The device may be integrated in a milking arrangement. An Independent claim is included for a method for determining the health of an animal's udder, by monitoring temperature and conductivity of milk.
