Process for detecting the presence of nitrogen and/or carbon from organic substances in soil, earth, sediments and compost comprises determining the nitrogen and/or carbon content of the fraction prepared by a wet chemical laboratory method; measuring the fraction by means of reflection and/or transmission spectroscopy in the wave length region of 400-2500 nm; calibrating the parameters in the from of absorption values and quantitatively evaluating by comparing the values from the wet chemical analyzed fractions. The relative sizes are utilized in the form of group or standard calibrations for the quantitative evaluation of further sample values. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for carrying out the process comprising a boiling bench with a heat source, boiling vessel and a condenser.
