New thermostable, toluene-soluble modified natural resin acid esters (I) prepared at 100-300 deg C, with elimination of water by: (1) reacting (A) natural resin and/or resin acid, (B) phenol polyfunctional towards oxo compounds, (C) aldehyde and/or acetal and (D) alkali compound; and (2) reacting the product with (E) alpha , beta -olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid and/or anhydride; and (3) esterification with (F) at least dihydric alcohol. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of (I).
