Illuminated display devices, such as those used in motor vehicles, need to be adapted to the environmental brightness levels, and include a sensor (3) for detecting the environmental brightness, where the display brightness is divided into three ranges, depending on the environmental brightness level. The display brightness for both the first and second ranges can be manually adjusted, and adjustment of the display brightness in the transitional range largely changes linearly with the environmental brightness. The display brightness in the transitional range is additionally dependent on the manually adjusted display brightness of the first and second ranges.
