A telecommunications exchange (1) has a multiplexer (2) with an output having a two-wire line leading to a network termination device (NT) (4) used by a subscriber. The multiplexer connects to two standard ports at the exchange that handle two B channels an associated D channel. The NT has two S0 interfaces to which up to eight terminals can connect, including a telephone, fax appliances or ISDN cards in PCs.
