The turbine (8) is linked to one of the compressors (7) by power line (9) so one compressor lies upstream of the heat exchanger (4) and the turbine lies downstream and joined to the primary side of the exchanger (4). The secondary side of the heat exchanger is joined to the exhaust pipe (3) as against the primary exchanger side which connects to a fresh air feed (6) via one of the compressors. The turbine (8) connects to an outlet line (11) and the power line (9) is connected to other appts e.g. gears and pump, using a mechanical connection (10) for this purpose e.g. a generator shaft or gear shaft. The outlet line (11) connects to the passenger compartment for heating purposes and a water separator is provided between turbine (8) and exhaust endpiece (12) in the outlet line (11).
