The method involves increasing engine speed until it reaches an intercept point with a defined characteristic and regulating the engine speed along the characteristic until reaching the desired vehicle speed. A change of transmission ratio during the primary phase is determined depending on a difference between the current engine power and a desired engine power. The method involves specifying a characteristic for the variation of engine speed (nm) to set a desired vehicle speed (vsoll) determined by the accelerator pedal and/or choke flap setting and increasing the engine speed until it reaches an intercept point with the characteristic (KLm,n) (primary phase) and regulating the engine speed along the characteristic until reaching the desired vehicle speed (secondary phase). A change of transmission ratio during the primary phase is determined depending on a difference (Pdiff) between the current engine power (Pist) and a desired engine power (Psoll).
