The decoder has coded rectangular signal inputs, a rectifier, a voltage regulator and a decoding device with an output for controlling model railway functions, two inputs connected to the input connections and a rewritable non-volatile memory. Input data are continually checked for validity by differential interrogation of the inputs. At least some data detected as valid are stored. An energy-saving mode is adopted if no valid data are received. The decoder has input connections for receiving coded rectangular signals, a rectifier, a voltage regulator and a decoding device with an output for controlling model railway functions based on the received data. The decoding device has two inputs connected to the two input connections and an internal rewritable non-volatile memory.
