A method for handling continually occurring transmission errors during data transmission between a subscriber (1a...1n) and a line module, such as 'line card' or SLMI (subscriber line module internet)(3a...3m) in a switching centre (2). During setting up the link for data transmission, the line properties are ascertained and the data transmission rate is matched/adapted to the detected line properties. Continual monitoring of data transmission is carried during the course of data transmission for ascertaining transmission errors. The bit-error rate of the data transmission is measured during the entire duration of data transmission, and when the bit error rate exceeds a given amount, the data transmission is adapted by reducing the data transmission rate. Adaption results from triggering a rapid initialisation procedure.
