The rack and pinion gear has a locking section(17) on the gear rack next to an enlarged tooth(10), and a tooth(16) on the pinion comes into contact with the locking section if another tooth(12) on the pinion comes into contact with the enlarged tooth. The locking section is in the form of a step on the gear rack. A recess(18) is provided in the gear rack between the enlarged tooth and locking section. The enlarged tooth has a transition between the flanks and backs opposite the locking section and is bevelled or rounded.
