The method involves using a coating arrangement with an application device (1) for electrically charged coating material, a voltage source for producing a voltage between the application device and the workpiece (3), a working current regulator that interacts with the voltage source and a controller of relative motion between the workpiece and application device during coating. The working current is detected, compared with a desired value and regulated to the desired value. The working current is first brought within a permitted control range by varying the voltage within defined limits; if this cannot be achieved the distance between the application device and workpiece is varied to bring the working current into the permitted range. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for implementing the method. -
