The franking machine has a control unit (1) controlling the components (2-10) of the franking machine, with a security module (4) calculating the postage charge data and for encoding and decoding of data. The security module encodes an entered security code for comparison with a stored access code read from a storage medium, for allowing access to security relevant functions and/or data only when the compared codes are the same. An independent claim for a method of protecting security relevant functions and data for a franking machine is also included.
