The method involves using a cylinder (10) to push against the back of a conveyor and pull the self-advancing support. A control unit controls the movement of a prop as it is inserted and positioned. A device measures the clearance between the cylinder and an abutment lying against the conveyor. After the prop is positioned, the conveyor is pulled back by the determined clearance. The cylinder is inserted before the beginning of the movement and is pushed as far as a pre-set maximum pressure load, and the insertion depth of the cylinder is measured as the clearance. An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is included for a self-advancing support unit for implementing the method.
