Laser welding of filled and non-filled plastic components involves transmitting a beam at the welding face between both plastic layers and cooling the upper surface of the beam transmitting layer
Two layers(1,2) of different plastic materials to be welded are positioned against each other for welding. One layer(2) transmits laser light(7) and the second layer(1) has high absorption of laser light. A laser beam is directed through the transmitting layer to melt the boundary(8) area between both layers while simultaneously a cooling gas flow(13) is directed at the upper surface(14) of the transmitting layer at the entry point of the beams. An independent claim is made for laser beam welding equipment including a workpiece clamp(3), a moving laser head(4) with beam(7) and a focussing lens(6) and a feed nozzle(10) for a cooling gas flow(13) directed at the entry point(12) of the beam into the beam transmitting layer(2).
