The representation device has a processor for allowing a stored volume data set with a number of volume data elements to be represented as a 2-dimensional image via a display monitor. An input device, e.g. a keyboard and/or a mouse control is used for selecting a viewing point (13) and a corresponding optical axis (14) for providing a perspective view with a defined angular field of view (15), which can be rotated about a rotation point (18) selected in dependence on the data values of the volume data elements within the angular field of view.
