Process for dewatering water-containing sediments on- and off-site comprises combining an electro-osmotic dewatering process with horizontal filter technology and/or a boring process and adjusting the alkali level. Preferred Features: The effectiveness of the electro-osmotic is increased by adjusting the alkali level at the anode. The anode is formed as a flat element, e.g. steel grid. The cathode is formed as dewatering pipes. Usual horizontal filter tubes are used which are made electrically conducting. The alkali level can be adjusted by spraying the surface with a sodium hydroxide solution.
