The bus system has a bus master (1) and at least one bus slave (2) coupled together via at least one bus line (7), with transmission of digital signals between the bus master and the bus slave in a defined cycle time during normal operation, the transmission of digital signals by the bus master to at least one bus slave suspended during an energy- saving operating mode. Alternatively the energy-saving operating mode employs a larger cycle time for transmission of digital signals between the bus master and the bus slaves and the transmission of the digital signals back to the bus master from the latter.
