Preparation of main group III element mono- and di-organo-compounds (I) comprises reacting organo-alkali(ne earth) halides (II) with (1) a halogen, organic and/or amino compound (III) of the group III element and then (2a) a compound (IV) and/or (2b) inorganic salt (V) of a main group V or VI element. Preparation of main group III element mono- and di-organo-compounds (C6R15)l+1M(XR9p)2-l (I) comprises reacting organo-alkali(ne earth) halides (C6R15)l+1M1R10q (II) with (1) a halogen, organic and/or amino compound MR3R4R5 (III) of the group III element and then (2a) a compound XR6R7m (IV) and/or (2b) inorganic salt Zy(VYh)i.XR6'(R7')m (V) of a main group V or VI element.
