The method involves retarding the ignition in at least one cylinder if knocking is detected by a system with at least two sets of evaluation electronics that are associated with at least one engine cylinder each and are functionally monitored. If a fault is detected in at least one set of evaluation electronics the associated cylinder(s) is coupled to the controler for cylinder(s) with intact evaluation electronics.
