The operating method uses controlled operation of switching devices (7), allowing individual fuel cells (2) or fuel cell stacks (3) to be switched into an out of operation, in dependence on the required power output of the fuel cell system (1). The switching devices can be provided by semiconductor switches, receiving control signals from a control device supplied with the required power output. An Independent claim for a fuel cell system is also included.
