A continually-operated mixer (3) has an enclosed container (5) with an inlet (9,10) and an outlet (9,10). The mixer (3) has two (1,8) or more intermeshing rotating mixer tools, each rotating about its own axis. The mixer tools (2) variable-pitch blades (1,8) of different profile. One blade (8) is a dissolving tool while the other (1) is a cruciform beam (1). The direction of rotation of the mixer drive (3) is opposite to or the same as that of the blades (1,8), or the blades are contra-rotating.
