The device has a tool magazine (2), in which a tool (3) to be changed is held in a magazine-ready position at a different orientation to that of its spindle axis. A tool holder device (5) in a transport device (4) rotates the tool between the ready position and a position parallel to the spindle, while the tool is being transported to or from the spindle transfer position, by an actuating device (6) with a sliding block guide (6a,b). The transport device is configured for a common transport path between the magazine ready position and the spindle transfer position and is flush with the rotation axis (3a) of the magazined tools. A rotation pin (5a) of the tool holder device extends perpendicularly to a plane containing the transport direction (4f) and the spindle axis (1a).
