The assembly to coat the surface of a web (8), especially of paper or cardboard, has two axially parallel press rollers (2,3) in a frame (4) with a coating applicator/dosing system (10,11) for at least one roller (2,3). A pressure spring (13,14) is between the two rollers (2,3), to apply a counter force on one of the rollers at the roller press gap (7). The spring (13,14) is along the longitudinal side of the assembly, between the bearing housings (15,16) for the press rollers (2,3). A distance bolt (17), of a variable length, transfers the force of the setting unit (5) to the press rollers (2,3) against the force of the spring (13,14). The distance bolt (17) is on a linkage mounting at both ends, between the two springs (13,14) supported at a bearing housing (15,16) of a press roller (2,3). The setting unit (5) is a hydraulic piston/cylinder system or a pneumatic bellows.
