The combustion state detector uses an ion current detection device in the cylinder, directly after combustion. The combustion state detector contains: - a spark plug (4) for the generation of a spark discharge upon application of a high voltage generated by an ignition coil (1) in response to an ignition signal in order thereby to ignite an air/fuel mixture in a cylinder of the engine; - an ion current detection device (6) for the detection-as an ion current detection signal-of an ion current according to an amount of ions which are generated in the cylinder directly after the combustion of the air/fuel mixture; - a signal detection device (7,9) for the comparison of the ion current detection signal with a reference voltage; and - an estimation device to estimate a reason for the non-generation of a combustion signal.
