Extraction of the anthelmintic santonin from Artemisia plants, comprises extraction with a non-polar solvent, partitioning between hexane-ethyl acetate and aqueous polar phase and chromatographing on silica gel
Extraction of the anthelmintic santonin from Artemisia plants, comprises extraction with a non-polar solvent, partitioning between hexane-ethyl acetate and aqueous polar phase and chromatographing on silica gel
Extraction and isolation of santonin (I) from Artemisia comprises extracting air-dried, powdered above-ground parts of the plants; concentrating under reduced pressure; dissolving the residue in hexane-ethyl acetate; removing water from the polar phase; drying the polar component over anhydrous sodium sulfate; removing the solvent from the (I)-containing fractions; and crystallizing pure (I). Extraction and isolation of santonin (I) from Artemisia plants comprises: (a) extracting air-dried, powdered above-ground parts of the plants with a non-polar solvent in a Soxhlet apparatus in a ratio of 1:6; (b) concentrating the extract under reduced pressure; (c) dissolving the residue in hexane-ethyl acetate (7:3 to 9:1) and partitioning using an aqueous polar phase; (c) removing water from the polar phase by adding sodium chloride at 5-8 g per 100 ml; (d) drying the polar component over anhydrous sodium sulfate, concentrating and chromatographing on silica gel, eluting with n-hexane followed by n-hexane/ethyl acetate (5:5 to 7:3); (e) removing the solvent from the (I)-containing fractions; and (f) crystallizing pure (I).
