The procedure for the running of an internal combustion engine with direct fuel injection in which fuel is fed by a pump(3) to a pressure accumulator(8) entails calculating the opening duration of the injection valve(10) in consideration of a typical periodic pulse pattern of the accumulator pressure for the fuel metering system. The accumulator pressure is measured before the injection and the measured pressure is corrected in consideration of the pulse pattern of the accumulator pressure. An Independent claim is included for a control element, and especially a read-only-memory or flash-memory, for a control unit to carry out the proposed procedure.
