Stud welding process comprises (a) moving stud holder (15) to contact site between front side of holder and workpiece surface; (b) raising holder from workpiece (17) to predetermined distance; (c) introducing part to be welded (19) into holder. Rest of process includes : (d) moving holder onto workpiece surface until contact of front side of part to be welded and workpiece surface is detected and acquiring distance moved by holder from starting position up to detection of contact; (e) comparing distance moved with starting position; (f) and welding.
