Condensation products (I) of 4-18 carbon (C)-alkyl-(oligo)saccharides (II), with 1-4 glycoside groups, and 3-6 C (hydroxy)-di- or tricarboxylic or sulfodicarboxylic acids (III) or their water-soluble salts are used as deodorants in topical formulations for suppressing body odor and acne. Condensation products (I) of 4-18 carbon (C)-alkyl-(oligo)saccharides of formula (II), with 1-4 glycoside groups, and 3-6 C (hydroxy)-di- or tricarboxylic or sulfodicarboxylic acids (III) or their water-soluble salts are used as deodorants in topical formulations for suppressing body odor and acne. RO(G)n (II) R : 4-18 C alkyl; G : a glycoside residue; and n : 1-4. An independent claim is also included for deodorant cosmetic compositions containing 0.1-10 wt.% (I) as deodorant component in an aqueous, emulsion, aqueous-alcoholic or water-free vehicle. - ACTIVITY : Antibacterial. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given.
