The glow plug a rod-shaped ceramic glow element (10) with connecting wires (12,13) at one end and a metal casing (15) partially enclosing the glow element outside the glow region (11) to hold the glow plug, e.g. in the wall of a burner. The metal casing encloses the connecting wire end of the glow element so as to leave an annular gap (18) between the inside of the casing and the glow element that is filled with a ceramic setting material.
