The device has a photoelectric light sensor (2) with defined spectral sensitivity for measuring ambient light and connected to a control circuit. The light sensor is only sensitive in a narrow spectral range of 400 to 525 nm and is essentially directed vertically upwards. It has a measurement cone with an aperture angle of up to 60 degrees. Independent claims are also included for the following: a method of switching driving lights depending on the spectral composition of ambient light.
