An internal combustion engine (1) is designed as a lifting piston engine and has a crankshaft (2), from which a camshaft drive (3) branches off that has camshafts (4,5) with equal RPMs. These camshafts form a component of a variable valve control. Cams operate a valve-activating lever jointly. This lever forms a transition to an inlet valve that is to be controlled.
