Surface treatment process comprises producing a treatment solution containing an ammonium compound, i.e. either ammonium borofluoride or ammonium chloride, or aqueous ammonia and magnesium silicofluoride; heating the solution to 70-100 deg C; and immersing aluminum or aluminum alloy in the treatment solution. An Independent claim is also included for a sliding element made of an aluminum or aluminum alloy base metal and coated with a film of NH4MgAlF6 and MgAlF5 . 1.5H2O or a mixture of NH4MgAlF6 and MgAl2F8 . 2H2O having a cubic crystalline structure and no crystal direction.
