Phenol-free stain solution for bacteria, comprising at least one dye, a solvent and at least one compound (I) as replacement for phenol, is new. (I) is 2-butoxyethyl acetate, 2-phenylethanol, benzyl alcohol, 4-methoxyphenol or cyclohexanol.
