Control of the fuel-air ratio at the inlet to an automotive catalytic converter by use of a feedback controller for the mixture supplied to the engine and an additional controller for the air-fuel ratio at the converter inlet
Control of the air-fuel ratio at the inlet (10) to a catalytic converter (11) is via two controllers, the first of which controls the air-fuel ratio at the engine (9) inlet, based on one or more oxygen sensors in the converter inlet, converter itself or its outlet and the second of which controls the air-fuel ratio at the inlet (10) to the converter if the first controller has overcompensated. The control mechanism of the first controller is a feedback mechanism, the second controls the operation of a substance for capturing or releasing oxygen in the atmosphere prior to the converter. An Independent claim is made for a procedure for controlling the air-fuel ratio at the inlet to a catalytic converter.
